The remaining five walked for many hours. When it was dark, they stopped, partially to see if the vines were active at night. When they found that they’re movements, or lack thereof, went unhindered in the dark, it took no time for them to build a small fire and rotate guarding.

Before sunup, they had broken camp and were on the move again. A few hours later, they broke out of the dense forest and the vines.

“It looks like we can go back to our normal routine now that we’re literally out of the woods.” Benson chuckled. “Question is, do we rappel off this edge here, or do we travel to the river before finding our way down?”

“We need food,” Bronson said. “And since we don’t have any, I’d say go to the river.”

“I agree with Melanie,” Curtis said.

“We could use some food and water,” Gundersen said. “We could also use downtime. Time to get ourselves together before we decide where to go.”

Benson nodded. “I concur. We need to de-stress before going on, if that’s what we choose.”

Once everyone had their say, some water, and a little rest, they pressed on to the river, though none knew how far that was or how long it would take. As they traveled, Benson led, watching for an attack by man or beast, or surprising a feeding animal, while Gundersen brought up the rear, on the lookout for anything that would attack from behind.

I hope we can just get to the river without anything else going wrong. He kept Melanie in view.
